The Rookie Mama: The story begins

On this pathway to entrepreneurship I decided that I would write a blog to accompany my journey into start-up-business-land. I threw around some ideas for a title. I wanted to create a commentary on my journey of (hopefully) growing The Letterman Co into an awesome international brand and at the same time chasing that elusive ‘work/ life’ balance all us working mommies dream of.

Becoming a mum had been one heck of a learning curve for me. I confess that when our first son came along, his was the first nappy (neé diaper) I’d ever changed. His was the second baby grow I’d ever wrestled with (the first had been on my nephew, it took an hour, and it ended up back to front and inside out).

Like many of my pals, I was a latecomer to this motherhood game and had been used to living a lively, full independent life. Overnight someone steals your social life, sleep and nubile pert body (ha ha!). So, I was heartened to meet some amazing mums on my crash course in parenthood. The mums I quickly bonded with were honest, told it like it was, and liked a cheeky glass of wine to lament over our two hours’ sleep! I call these mummy friends my ‘Muffia’, aka the ‘Momma Maffia’. And they have saved my sanity over these past five years.

I wanted to use that same ethos in my blog. I come from the mummy tribe that enjoys the Samuel L Jackson’s narrated bedtime story, and articles like ‘Playground Purgatory’. I wanted to tell my story like it is. The struggles, the excitement, the reality of trying to juggle mothering two balls of chaos, the school run, striving for a harmonious marriage and launching a brand!
